Psychological First Aid Training for Student Leaders

A preventative, evidence-based mental well-being programme for schools

Why Psychological First Aid in Schools?

Adolescents today are facing unprecedented emotional and social pressures. Research shows that Gen Z learners report significantly poorer mental health than previous generations, with many experiencing distress long before reaching professional support.

Schools are uniquely positioned to:

  • Identify distress early
  • Foster safe peer support
  • Promote healthy help-seeking behaviours

Psychological First Aid does not replace counselling or therapy.
Instead, it provides students with the skills to notice, listen, support, and refer appropriately, reducing isolation and increasing connection.

What is Psychological First Aid?

Psychological First Aid is an evidence-based, humane approach to supporting someone in emotional distress.

It focuses on:

  • Recognising signs of distress
  • Responding calmly and compassionately
  • Helping someone feel heard, seen, and supported
  • Knowing when and how to refer to trusted adults or professionals

Importantly, students are trained in ethical boundaries and responsibility, ensuring support is safe, appropriate, and non-clinical.

Programme Goals

Our PFA programme aims to:

-Encourage early help-seeking behaviour

-Reduce student distress

-Empower student leaders with practical support skills

-Promote a connected and caring student body

-Increase awareness and use of school wellness resources

How Programme Fees Support Community Mental Health

Funds generated through our Psychological First Aid programme directly support The Together Project’s art-based mental health support groups for youth and community members who would otherwise have limited access to care. These groups use creative expression as a gentle, accessible way to process emotions, build connection, and reduce isolation. By partnering with us, schools are not only investing in the well-being of their own students but also helping sustain community-based, preventative mental health support rooted in dignity, creativity, and inclusion.

This covers two sessions:

-One training session focused on learning skills and understanding the role and responsibilities.

-A hands-on practice session to put their new skills to the test.

All students who pass a test after these trainings received a certificate that they can use on their university applications.
